Supports children in a forward-leaning posture that promotes relaxation and helps them to function on the toilet.

"I think Aquanaut is great: I love it. It's very, very supportive of the child who is rather stiff. Aquanaut holds him in the right position to relax and urinate. It's convenient and easy to switch from one bathroom to another, and it needs little maintenance." Mrs. Cheryl Deal, Special Ed Teacher, Arizona.

"We like Aquanaut very much. It is very easy to install, and a real benefit for school systems is being able to store the whole unit on a wall adaptor above the toilet." Brandi Perry, Occupational Therapist, Alabama.

"Aquanaut is a really superior product: the quality of the seating and positioning is excellent, especially in supporting a relaxed position for bowel movements. Our son has very poor positioning, and seating is a challenge. The flexible nature of the kneestrap allows the strap to be positioned lower to help restrain his leg movement, even though he has quite a lot of tone. We have been using Aquanaut for two years now, and I have recommended it to the school. We bought a second toilet adaptor to use Aquanaut at the grandparents' house too. " Dawn Northrup, Parent, Michigan.

"It's awesome! Aquanaut is the only seating device small enough to fit into our bathroom, and the first day we installed it, our 6-year old daughter was able not only to sit on the toilet by herself, but it gave her enough balance to take off her shirt, put on her pajama top, and brush her own teeth. It really gives her independence and makes her feel like a big girl. For the children in this ability range, it's the only thing out there." Rose Pelton, parent and occupational therapist, Michigan.

DESIGN

1. Contoured sitting surface

The contoured sitting surface helps maintain the legs in abduction and facilitates positioning of the child. Beveling at the front edge of the seat accommodates those children who have a slight knee flexion contractures or tight hamstrings and cannot achieve 90 degrees flexion at the knees.

2. Removable anterior (trunk) support

Channeled arm troughs encourage the child to hold the support and thus promote a flexed position of the trunk. When the child holds the support, hip flexion increases past 90 degrees to promote muscle relaxation and minimize extensor patterns. The child gains added stability by grasping the anterior support.

3. Contoured back support

While not intended to provide posterior support, the seat back acts to cue the child to flex forward in the seat. It can be grasped by the child to provide a source of stability during transfer.

4. Soft deflector

The deflector keys to the aperture, making removal simple. The soft deflector material protects the child from injury during transfers.

5. Toilet bowl adaptor

Once the adaptor is in place, it's easy to put Aquanaut on or take it off the toilet. To remove the seat, tip it back and pull.

Note: The adaptor fits most floor mounted toilets. Wall mounted toilets generally have a wider design and may not accommodate Aquanaut. Use 180-22 wide base adaptor kit. See below for more details.

COMPONENTS

6. Variable width aperture

The Aquanaut aperture is slim at the front to maximize sitting support and reassure kids that they "won't fall in". It's wide at the back to make hygiene easier.

7. Hip Pads

Optional hip pads can be added to provide more intimate stabilization of the pelvis, while accommodating the child's growth.

8. Twin Towers

The towers provide lateral trunk support for those children who require it. They can act to cue the child to bring their trunk back to a stable, midline position.

9. Adjustable knee strap

The knee strap provides backward pressure just below the knees, that aids pelvic stabilization and discourages extensor patterns. These straps are made from a thermoplastic rubber to avoid complications from latex allergies.

10. Independent,
bi-level foot support

Foot support helps to position the lower extremities to achieve 90-degree flexion at the knees and ankles and at least 90-degree flexion at the hips. It can also be used as a step to assist the child during transfers on and off the toilet.

11. Optional Wall Bracket

A wall bracket provides convenient storage for Aquanaut while not in use.
